I’m struggling to come to terms with the events these past days, a tightness in my chest whenever they come up. I am a person of color and I do feel uncomfortable talking about race issues- know it’s not just white people who do. I think it’s because I’ve felt that people may not “get it” in a sense how race directly affects outward image and perception but maybe that is the core of all this divide- the lack of communication- so I’m going to speak about this concept because it’s time to change habits.
I’ve talked to people about these emotions, ideas, and struggles but I keep going back to square one: What is the source of all this manifestation of hate? Of course I am not just talking about the recent instances of police brutality but every hate crime involving people of color whether that be through racist or religious intent and recent events have made me ask this question again.
I don’t know the answer. I can’t tell you the concrete answer, only speculation but I think just being educated, as simple as it sounds, improve situations all around. I’m not just talking about school education but world events. I come from two heritages which undoubtably impacted how I see the world around me- not just where I live, but also how global issues impact most of my family who live outside the US. I have developed these emotional connections allowing me to further discover sources of problems which I am so grateful for.
Just because I am a POC, I am not denying or hiding my privilege in fact I will openly talk about it but the way we talk about race, the way we talk about the intersection of race and privilege needs systemic change. That starts with education- not just schooling but educating yourself about issues beyond your community- read the news. Let me be clear about something: racism is not just in the US, it is a global problem. There is not just racism between white people and POCs but interracial conflict, and race/religion conflict. Read about it, understand it and continuously do it!! Don’t just think a one time post will solve anything. Education lasts a lifetime, knowledge lasts a life time, a post is only relevant for 24 hours. Continued in comments
